GRE- Graduate Record Examination

GRE exam | GRE practice test | GRE test

Used for general graduate admissions, the GRE exam is an adaptive test taken electronically at a certified ETS center. The exam is adaptive, and test-takers' performance in one chapter determines the level of the second chapter in the respective section. The GRE assesses applicants' academic ability, such as argumentation, vocabulary, logic and analytical quantitative skills in order to provide graduate programs with a standardized evaluation of applicants' academic promise.

GRE test Structure

The 3.5-hour exam is comprised of three sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Exams are offered every two weeks in Israel, taking place in Ramat Gan College; the exam costs $195. The exam also includes a "pilot" section (ungraded) which can be either verbal or quantitative.

  • Analytical Writing (AWA) – graded on a 0-6 scale. Includes a 30-minute "evaluate the argument" essay assignment and 30-minute "evaluate a topic" essay assignment.
  • Verbal Reasoning – graded on a 130-170 scale. Multiple-choice questions focusing on academic vocabulary (Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence), logic and reading comprehension.
  • Quantitative Reasoning – graded on 130-170 scale. Multiple-choice questions in two formats (problem-solving and & quantity comparison) on various math topics, such as statistics, geometry, algebra and word problems.

"I work/study full-time. How can I fit a GRE course in my schedule?"

GRE preparation requires 5-15 hours of work at home for students taking the full test. With the right time-management it's definitely possible— most GRE students at YedaPlus work/study full-time. Our center is open in the afternoon to students who wish to study in a quiet place.

"I am interested in applying to Top Ph.D. programs."

Applying to Top Ph.D. programs, such as those at Harvard, UPenn, University of Chicago and LSE, is a highly competitive process. Although the application is reviewed holistically (which means that other considerations like experience, leadership and internationalism are taken into account) – you need a certain GRE score to be considered a strong applicant, preferably over 160 in each section. Nonetheless, the nature of the program (i.e. whether it is hard sciences or humanities) will determine your target score. For instance, even top-10 Ph.D. programs in literature require a relatively low quantitative score (about 152 or so).

Application Coaching Packages covering Resume + Personal Statement + CV + Interview Prep are offered at significant discount to our students. For more info, visit
