  • What is meant by Accommodations?

For parents and students, regarding accommodations

Some important points to consider when deciding whether to bring in a child for evaluation or to undergo evaluation yourself:

    · Just because someone reads or processes information slowly or occasionally makes careless mistakes, he or she is not necessarily learning-disabled or has a serious attention deficit, according to the DSM-IV – the manual of the American Psychiatric Association – or to the Americans for Disabilities Act. Diagnosed disabilities must meet DSM and ADA criteria for ADHD, reading disability, writing disability or learning disorder, not otherwise specified, to get accommodations.

    · Accommodations can be granted for impairment due to medical conditions like diabetes, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, orthopedic problems or psychiatric disorders like bipolar illness or others. If you are on medication that induces fatigue or restlessness, that may qualify too. Psychological disorders such as depression or anxiety also can qualify if they impair functioning and the individual has been in therapy prior to the evaluation.

    · The results of an evaluation may surprise you. Going into an assessment, you may think that your functioning is very impaired, but your test scores may show that you’re not as limited as you think. In addition, because testing techniques have improved, and some evaluations are more comprehensive than others, a more recent evaluation may generate conclusions different from those shown in previous evaluations. For example, someone who thinks he has a reading disability sometimes is found to have an attention deficit, while someone who thinks she’s ADD may actually have an anxiety disorder.

    · Undergoing an evaluation does not mean you have purchased accommodations. The difficulties presented must qualify as a disability per the above criteria.

    · If you have a medical, psychiatric or neurological disorders, like ADHD, you will need to submit the evaluation with a letter from your doctor attesting to your problem.

    · Documentation must be submitted six weeks in advance, so don’t wait till the last minute to come for an evaluation.

    · These evaluations can take much longer and are more extensive than school-related evaluations. One reason for this is that testing boards require an extensive and detailed personal history. Take this into account when you decide when to schedule an evaluation.

The above information was provided courtesy of Dr. Tova Elberg who may be contacted through http://www.tovaelberg.com/

  • What is an appropriate timeline for admission to US Colleges and Universities?

Begin your search of possible U.S. colleges or universities, keeping in mind your desired field of study, size and location of school, and level of religious observance. Utilize:
    Web resources
    Reference books
    College/University websites
    Yeda Plus Counselors
Establish a list of 10-12 prospective schools
Prepare for and take the TOEFL and SAT.

    12-14 months before U.S. study (June-August)

Request application forms and information from prospective schools, or access this information and the necessary forms online.
Narrow your choices to one or two institutions that you would like to attend but that may not accept you (“reach schools”), one or two which you feel would accept you, and one or two where you are quite certain to gain admission (“safety schools”).
Identify two or three teachers or other people who know (e.g. Army commander, former employer) you well and ask them to write references for you. Provide them with a summary of your academic/extracurricular background and tell them which aspects you want them to address.
Ask the schools you have attended to prepare your transcripts. Any copies of the transcript you submit to a university must be certified with the official seal of the school that issued it, or certified by another authorized official. Transcripts must be translated into English, and the translation must also be certified (notarized) Yeda Plus provides this service. The schools send the original and the student sends the notarized and translated copy.
Obtain a copy of your Bagrut and have it translated and notarized.
If your previous TOEFL or other exam scores were not satisfactory, take the test again.
Take SAT II subject tests (not all schools require these, it is important to research what is specifically required or recommended for international students). Not every school will accept Hebrew as a language SAT II if it is your native language.

11 months before U.S. study (September)
Review the applications you have received and note the deadlines for each institution.
Consider benefits of early admission/decision options and corresponding deadlines.
Note requirements for need-based and merit-based financial aid and submit related information.
Begin exploring external scholarship resources. Apply well in advance of deadlines. Yeda Plus can assist with this
Write your application essays and statement of purpose. Have these checked for content and clarity. Yeda Plus provides this service

10 months before U.S. study (October)

Type or fill in the original applications by hand. Online is cleaner and easier to make changes, but you should do what you feel most comfortable with. If you have beautiful calligraphy, this may impress someone!
Make a checklist of the items required for submission with each application. These may very slightly from one college to the next, but they usually include:
The nonrefundable application fee; usually a dollar check that can be cashed at a bank in the United States.
Required financial statements, such as notarized financial forms from the institution, bank letters, etc.
    The completed application form.
Your essay or statement of purpose.
Some Schools require “supplements’ particularly in the arts, this may include a portfolio of your work
Keep copies of the completed applications and essays, and mail the originals to the institutions in the United States. Observe the deadlines!
Make sure your recommendations and school transcripts have been sent. Since the recommendations need to be sent by the recommender and the original transcripts by this school, it is very important to follow up with this.
Check to make certain that you have requested that your test results for the TOEFL, SAT, and SAT II exams have been sent to each of the universities you have applied.
    Retake SAT if necessary.

Wait to hear from the institutions which you have applied:

  • Where can I get information about the revised GRE General test?

Plans for the Revised GRE® General Test Cancelled
    Contact: Tom Ewing | (609) 683-2899 | [email protected]
Princeton, N.J. (April 2, 2007) — ETS has cancelled plans to launch the revised Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE®) General Test. The decision was made in consultation with the Executive Committee of the GRE Board.

While ETS and the Board remain committed to improving the test, on balance, GRE officials said they believe problems guaranteeing complete access to the new Internet-based test outweighed the benefits of immediately moving to the new format.

ETS originally planned to launch the revised GRE General Test worldwide in September. Instead, the company will continue to offer the test worldwide in its current computer-based, continuous testing format. Registrations in India, China and Japan, which had been closed, will be reopened in the near future to accommodate application deadlines. Likewise, registrations for the current GRE General Test will continue elsewhere.

“The decision to cancel the revised GRE General Test best serves the interests of test takers and the graduate institutions that use those scores to make admissions decisions,” says David Payne, Executive Director of the GRE Program at ETS. “After much debate and evaluation, it became clear that the current format offers students more convenient and flexible opportunities to test when and where they choose, while still providing score users with valid predictors of test takers’ preparedness for graduate school study.”

The primary reason for canceling the launch of the revised GRE General Test was test taker access. Plans called for the revised test to be delivered over the new worldwide network of 3,200 Internet-based testing centers. Despite the network’s size, ETS officials did not believe that full access to the General Test for all students could be confidently assured.

“As the launch approached, ETS determined that, despite the aggressive development of our Internet-based testing network, we could not guarantee complete access to all students needing to take the exam” Payne explains. “While the graduate community supports, and in fact helped develop and pilot the revised GRE General Test, they have also stated that they are satisfied with the current GRE General Test, until such time as improvements can be gradually implemented. ETS is being responsive to their best interests.”

ETS officials will work with the GRE Board to implement many of the planned test content improvements in the future without the access issues associated with changing to an entirely new test delivered over a brand new testing network.

  • What is need blind admission? Are international students eligible?

Several US universities have separated the college application process in two distinct parts.
A student is evaluated on their academic and personal credentials independently of their need for financial support.
For example, Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia and Stanford, amongst others, do not charge tuition to students accepted to the university undergraduate) for families earning less than $40,000 per year and for some of these Colleges the threshold is $60,000 family income for free tuition.
This policy also applies to international students. For more information write to us at [email protected]

An airline flight attendant will ask you to fill out a I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) in the airplane before you land at the U.S. port of entry. You will present the I-94 form together with your passport to the immigration inspector when you land. The immigration inspector will stamp the I-94 with a”D/S” (duration of status). “D/S/” means that you may stay in the USA until you complete your studies. You should keep the I-94 form and a copy of your valid I-20 with your passport at all times.

  • If my F-1 visa expires, how do I renew it?

The F-1 visa is an entry document only. The visa only needs to be valid at the time you enter the USA. It does not need to be renewed if you stay in the USA. However, you may wish to visit another country on your vacation periods from school. If your visa has expired, ask your foreign student advisor to provide complete information about how to renew your visa. You may then apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country you are visiting.

  • Now that I have my F-1 visa, when can I enter the USA?

The visa will normally allow you to enter the USA during a period of 30 days before the reporting date shown on the I-20. For example, if the reporting date is January 1st, the visa will permit you to enter the United States any time between December 2nd and January 1st.

  • What do I do with my I-20 form?

Take your I-29 form together with your admission and financial support document to the USA Embassy or Consulate and apply for the F-1 visa. The USA Embassy is in Tel Aviv and the USA Consulate is in Jerusalem.
Please note: THE FORM I-20 DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL BE ISSUED A F-1 VISA. The local Consular official makes the final decision on whether or not to issue a student visa.

  • What is a form I-20?

When you are admitted by a college or university, they will send you an immigration form called the I-20. This form indicates your field of study (major) and the length of your studies. as well as the date at which you must arrive to the university/college.
The I-20 form allows the student to apply for a visa known as the F-1 Visa. There is also a form IAP-66 which results in a J-1 student visa, because this is not available to most students information is not given here.
